The solar plexus outside of the martial arts world is often referred to as the coeliac/celiac plexus. Coeliac is derived from the Latin word coeliacus, which comes from the Greek term koiliakos, koilia which means ‘belly’. Plexus is also Latin and literally means ‘plaited formation’.
In the east the solar plexus has a strong spiritual dimension. It is one of seven primary chakra or energy centres in the human body. The Sanskrit name for the solar plexus is the manipura chakra. According to this view, the solar plexus chakra controls the psychic energy field called the aura. It is through the solar plexus centre that different types of spiritual energy enter the body for distribution.
A powerful blow can have a devastating effect and cause immense abdominal pain. It will quite literally knock the wind right out of their lungs, and they will find it difficult to regain a normal breathing pattern. If executed with enough force it can temporarily halt visceral functioning and unconsciousness often accompanies these symptoms.
